The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
