The Iconic Game Celebrates 20 Years – How a Plastic Axe Bridged the Gap Among Music Generations

Marking two decades since the legendary game first launched across the Atlantic, providing everyday gamers the means to feel like a rock star. Not in reality, though you'd be hard-pressed telling that anyone who's nailed Free Bird’s lengthy instrumental break before an enthusiastic crowd of friends.

Created by Harmonix, the game gave players a guitar-shaped controller to follow coloured notes scrolling down the display in time with the music. Every sequence mimicked particular chords, producing the feel of a genuine performance.

The studio previously experimented with rhythm games before partnering with RedOctane, later purchased by Activision in 2006. Together, they laid the foundations for an unlikely massively profitable series that had a remarkable impact on numerous of the artists featured, introducing decades-old bands to a new generation of gaming enthusiasts.

Michael Dornbrook, ex-chief operating officer of Harmonix, remembers the initial budgetary hurdles of licensing the recordings – even though the first two games primarily featured cover versions.

“We reproduced all the music because the cost prohibitive,” he says. “Even with the necessary permissions by themselves, it was extremely difficult. We couldn’t get acts such as the Who – RedOctane was operating on a shoestring budget, and our team was pretty convinced it would fail. However, when the game took off, and record sales airtime were going up, all artists desired to be in.”

He adds: “One of the amazing things was the number of mothers and fathers got in touch and thanked us for introducing their children to the music they loved. It evolved into a multigenerational phenomenon.”

Timeless Music Finds Younger Fans

Irish blues-rock band one featured act had Never Too Late in the 2008 release the popular installment. Lead musician the artist recalls how the series revived older hits to the forefront: “The game offered a larger, younger audience. Typically this had been considered outdated material, but then once it got included in the game young people discovered it, suddenly it became trendy. This validated the genre, eliminating the outdated label. It gave all our music renewed popularity.”

At that time, the Answer’s debut album remained not available stateside, meaning Guitar Hero was a key medium of discovery for the band as they went on a North American tour supporting the rock giants. “The roadies had on the song during travel, and several recognized us thanks to the game,” Mahon says.

Rock’s Heavyweight Spin-offs and Lasting Impact

Music's heavyweight names quickly took advantage of the game's success, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and others featuring in dedicated game editions centered around their music collections and associated stories, visuals and rock’n’roll mythology. For example, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, reportedly to have made the band greater revenue compared to their records. It sold well over half a million units upon release, while demand for Aerosmith’s music saw an increase of up to 40% at a time when the music business faced decline.

Guitar Hero continues to inspire nimble-fingered fanaticism among its fans. Earlier this year, a streamer achieved a remarkable feat of DragonForce’s the challenging track – an infamously tough power-metal song popularized through Guitar Hero – using a fan-made version, a no-cost alternative with similar mechanics but an array of customisation options. The song is challenging enough on the hardest setting, let alone performed at increased tempo while hitting a single one of the thousands of cues. The streamer stated requiring months of practice of practice.

“The game offers a, fantasy thing. Just as with other games, that doesn’t mean you should use actual weapons and enlist,” notes musician the artist.

The band previously completed a profitable run before Through the Fire and Flames appeared in the third game, yet he explains it made them widely recognized. “I recall the record label calling to tell me that our records were moving rapidly,” he says. “Popularity surged when we next toured, and we were playing just before the headliners at the event.”

In fact, DragonForce’s exposure from Guitar Hero was so immense that it threatened to eclipsing everything else accomplishments. Recently, the track was used in promotional material for a major film. “Previously I thought differently, but I’ve made peace with it,” he admits. “Should you just hear a single track, it’s totally cool – everyone’s got their own path in music and I'm pleased we played a role in fans' experiences”.

Enduring Legacy of a Iconic Controller

Top-tier promotion, be it for cars, apparel or video games, goes further mere transactions – it evokes a desire. Did Guitar Hero harness this? “Precisely what we were trying to create,” Dornbrook says. “The excitement of performing as a rock star in the spotlight. From day one, the co-founders felt that humans have a natural urge to create songs, and they wanted to use technology to allow people to participate”.

Most installments were released over a mere half-decade from 2005 to 2010, including spin-offs like DJ Hero, including a turntable controller, and Band Hero. After that, the publisher’s interest on peripherals waned, aside from a short-lived revival several years later.

Games such as the fan project and Fortnite Festival have maintained the scene alive, with expectations of something from the original publisher on the way. Recently formed developers has begun work on its debut music game. The initial creators are both involved as special advisers. Is the world prepared to welcome a new entry following the classic?

“Our team believed those games might become similar to sports games where you can releases,” Dornbrook says. “There’s so much fresh tracks it could remain perennially popular, thus I remain hopeful. It's entirely possible for it to continue for future fans.”
