This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional body horror, but within Together lies a deep examination about how we choose to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that come with most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can undertake right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
