Fresh analysis suggests that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using such treatments must be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Doctors propose the way of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
People who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
